Getting to Know Us... Part 2
Welcome to part 2 of our "Getting to Know Us" series. There are only two of us behind the wheel at Little Bird Online Marketing, and personal touch is a HUGE part of our business, so we thought it was about time we introduced ourselves properly.
If you missed part 1, we introduced Courtney last month. Check it out here.
This month we're checking in with partner #2.
So here it is, part 2 of our 2-part series, introducing Janelle...
First up, a few personal questions:
Who is Janelle Strickland and what are you doing when you're not being an awesome boss lady?
I'm a mum and a wife, so when I'm not working I'm usually spending time with my little fam bam. We spend a lot of time down the Gold Coast with family and friends, and we try to get outdoors as much as we can, taking the furbaby for walks and to the beach. During any spare time we're either finishing our house reno's (5 years later), reading crime fiction novels, binge watching series or planning my next holiday, which is usually home to South Africa to see my family.
What's your favourite ice cream flavour?
Mint choc chip!!! Although I don't really eat a lot of icecream.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
YInMn Blue - check it out, it's stunning! Why this colour? Because it was discovered by accident, it's striking, and it's bluetiful!
What are you known for?
Being organised. Haha - I love a to-do list, a bit of pen and paper, planning events and holidays. It makes me feel a little bit more in control of my crazy, hectic life!
And now let's talk business:
How do you define success?
To me, success comes in many forms. Some days it's just getting out of bed and keeping the kiddo alive. Other days it's smashing out that to-do list and meeting goals. Mostly though, it's a sense of achievement for me. I feel successful if I have done something important to help people, if I've done something that has meaning. That's personal success to me.
For the business, success will be defying the odds. They say that 20% of small businesses fail in their first year, 30% of small business fail in their second year, and 50% of small businesses fail after five years in business. I want to beat those odds and still be here 10 years later. 20! I also want to build a business that lets me have the lifestyle I want for my family, but also offers that to other mums. Being a mum and working full time is hard - so many Australian businesses are still living in the 9 to 5, tied to the desk kind of workplace, and it doesn't suit our modern lifestyle. When we eventually hire people, I want to make sure our business does!
What's your favourite piece of advice for other small business owners?
Start with a plan (told you I'm a planner). But how can you start something when you don't know where you want to go? So take the time to dream big, and then take more time to put together a business plan so that you know how you're going to get there.
Also - don't be afraid to get help! Outsource, swap skills, ask questions. Just because you're a business owner doesn't mean you're 100% perfect at everything!
One word that defines how you work:
What inspires you as a business owner?
Seeing us grow as a business. Seeing others grow in their business! It's like "if they can do it, then so can I", and I hope our success inspires that thought in others. There's far too much unnecessary competition in business - there's plenty of people in this world to be your customer, there's enough to share and go around!
Why did you start Little Bird?
So, Courtney actually started Little Bird - I joined about a year later when we decided to partner up. We kept the brand because Courtney had already put so much work into it. But we are where we are today because we're partners, neither of us did this alone.
But why did I want to have my own business? I actually never have - it was never a dream of mine. I had been perfectly happy working for others, up until both my husband and I were made redundant within the space of 2 months. I got made redundant the week before going back to work full time after maternity leave. I was just sick and tired of other people having so much control over the outcomes of my life. So, I took control back. I worked full time and ran the biz on the side for 7 months, and then I resigned from a business I had been with for 7 years. And here we are!
So that's us - Courtney and Janelle, Little Bird Online Marketing. Together we have over 17 years of marketing experience and a passion for our small business, and others, to succeed. And we want to thank you for your support this far into our journey - we hope you stick around for the rest of it. We promise - big things are coming!
And of course, if you're interested in having us as your partners in marketing, hit us up - we'd love to chat (especially if it's over coffee)!
