9 Must-have Tools for Social Media Marketing

When you’re running your own business and there’s a million things to do, then any tools that can help you streamline and be more efficient are must-have tools. And when it comes to doing your social media marketing, there are also a million tools to choose from, some free, some paid, some good, some not-so-good. So how do you know which tools will help you and which ones won’t?

We’ve test-run some of them for you, and we use quite a few of these ourselves. So here are 9 must-have tools for your social media marketing efforts.

#1. HOOTSUITE

Hootsuite is a social media management platform that lets you manage your social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Wordpress and various others through applications), delegate tasks with other users (great for a team),  publish and schedule content, and see analytics.

You can use Hootsuite for free, for one person with up to 3 social profiles (perfect for a small business), but there are various priced plans available if you need more functionality than what the free version offers.

#2. BUFFER

If you don’t need the whole social media management hog, but just need a tool to help you publish and schedule content to your social platforms, then Buffer is the tool for you. You can quickly and easily schedule your posts to go live later, manage multiple accounts from one login, and see how your content performs. It is easy to use and simply helps you get the job done quicker.

There is a free version, as well as priced packages - so cost will really depend on what you need, how many social accounts you have and how often you post.

#3. MENTION

This simple, user-friendly and results-driven tool is perfect for monitoring your brand mentions, staying in the know on certain topics, and leveraging relevant conversations. You simply select keywords you want to monitor, and Mention will scour the internet for any “mention” of those keywords and alert you in real time when your keyword comes up. Then you can quickly join in a conversation, answer any questions that may be related to your brand or product and monitor your brand sentiment.

Mention is easily integrated with your social accounts, and you can do all of the above without ever leaving the app. It also provides extensive analytics and the ability to export data.

You can get a 14-day free trial for Mention, but after that prices start from $25 per month.

#4. TAGBOARD

Tagboard is a free, highly useful, multi-platform tool that helps you monitor social conversations and act on them quickly. Tagboard is all about combining user generated content (UGC) with your own branded social content. Using hashtags, Tagboard searches for and collects public social media posts that are relevant to your brand. You can then use these to monitor how your brand is mentioned, curate content, or even embed social posts for live broadcast, on venue screens, and more.

Unfortunately Tagboard is not a free tool, but for an event or something where you really want to stand out, the cost may be worth it!

#5. FACEBOOK OVERLAY TOOL

If you’ve run your own Facebook ads before then you’re likely to be familiar with their 20% text overlay rule. Annoying isn’t it? It’s caused marketers a lot of frustration and additional work, especially when you only find out after you’ve created the ad that your image has been rejected because of this rule.

So here is the Facebook Overlay Tool to the rescue. Before creating your ad, just upload your image and this tool will tell you if your image is ok, or if you have too much text. It will also tell you just how much is too much - these days your image may not be outright rejected, but if it’s just a little bit over the 20% rule, it could still run, but with limited reach. If it’s way too much, your ad won’t deliver.

It’s free to use, and while it may be an extra step, it could be one that saves a lot of frustration down the line.

#6. FACEBOOK PAGE PERFORMANCE BAROMETER

Your Facebook is an investment - often of your time, resources and money. So obviously you want to know how it’s performing don’t you?

The Barometer tool doesn’t tell you how your specific page is performing - your Facebook Insights can tell you that - but it does tell you how it is performing in comparison to industry averages. So you can use this tool to know where you stand against the competition, figure out what you should focus on and see what you don’t need to spend more time on.

#7. HEADLINE ANALYSER

A big part of social media marketing is content creation, and a big part of this is writing headlines. Not really the easiest thing to do if you’re not a writer. But, a good headline will help your content get more engagement, so it is important.

#9. DISCOVERLY

This free Chrome extension allows you to see the social sites of your email connections and cross-reference other social sites as you browse, making it the perfect online networking tool. So, for example, if you’re on LinkedIn and come across the profile of a potential business partner, you can use Discoverly to see any mutual connections you may have on Facebook or Twitter. You can then use this information to get your mutual friend to set up an introduction, and bam, networking through social.
