10 Ways to Make Your Website Relevant in 2018

So yes, I know it's May. We're nearly halfway through the year and I'm still giving you tips on how to do things right in 2018 (isn't that so January?)! But, bear with me because I think this one is important, because no matter whether it is January, May or December, there are still things you can do now - and over the next 7 months - to make your website more relevant to your customers in 2018, 2019, 2020, and beyond.

So much time and energy goes into launching a website, but all too often the "set and forget" mindset takes over, and a website becomes a stagnant asset for your business rather than one that continuously adds value.

To stay relevant to your customers, and potential customers, it's so important to update your website regularly. So here are a few tips of things that are on-point in 2018, for you to keep your website fresh, relevant and valuable.

#1. Make it Secure

Online security breaches seem to be in the news daily at the moment, so while this might not be sexy or fun, it's a big one! #2. Design it for Mobile

In 2016, for the first time ever more people visited websites from their smartphones than from desktop computers, and this percentage is only increasing. So, it's really important that your website is mobile-friendly! There are a few simple ways to incorporate mobile-friendly design elements into your website:

  • Remove any Flash elements - they don't show on smartphones
  • Avoid using very large images that can weigh down your site and make your page load slow
  • Use fonts that are large enough to read on small screens
  • Use a responsive design that automatically adjusts to any screen size

#3. Humans Over Bots

Gone are the days where you have to stuff your content so full of keywords that it doesn't make sense to any human consumer. Now, Google gives preferences to sites that have content that is easy to read and understand, uses keywords more minimally, and makes sense to the end user. So, when it comes to creating content for your website - write for humans, tweak for search engines!

If you want your website to stay relevant, you need to write for the people visiting it. The easier your content is to navigate, consume and understand, the longer people will stay on the page and interact with your site - and these metrics are important to Google. They tell Google that your site is relevant to your customer's searches, so you'll show higher up in search results. Win for you, win for your visitor!

#4. Update Your Website Often

Google prioritises websites that are updated regularly because it's ensuring your content is fresh and relevant. Here are a few ways you can continue to get in front of your customers with new content:

  • A weekly, fortnightly or monthly blog post
  • Update your team page with new employee headshots and bios
  • Add new case studies of client's you've worked with
  • Add relevant blogs to services pages

Just ensure you aren't adding content just for the sake of it - it still needs to be informative and helpful, and not stuffed full of keywords.

#5. Speaking of Keyword Stuffing

Keywords do still matter, but what also matters is that they're used more strategically and not just placed everywhere and anywhere. You should use keywords in your URL, in subheadings and titles, and in the first and last 100 words of your content. But, you do not need to use them in every sentence. Ultimately, you want to aim for selecting the keyword that your ideal customer is searching for and place it in your content where it makes the most sense to your users and to Google.

#6. Sharing is Caring

Social media still rules everything in 2018, so you need to make your website social media friendly in order to stay relevant. This means making it super-easy for customers to share your content - add social sharing buttons to your blog posts, include pre-written social posts (Tweetables) to encourage sharing, and add your social icons to your website so people can find you easily.



#7. Use Video

Video is bigger than ever this year, so if you're not on that bandwagon yet, get on there quick smart! Video offers more value than any content or image you've used in the past because it offers higher rates of engagement and better click-through rates.

#8. Keep an Eye on Your Competition

So we're not saying copy their every move - that wouldn't be cool. But, you should sign up to their newsletters, follow them on social media, read their blog posts... That way you can see what they're doing, how their customers respond to them and see if you're maybe missing the beat on a new trend or a new way to relate to your customers.

#9. Track Your Numbers

Unfortunately, like number 1, this point isn't sexy or fun (unless you're a number cruncher, then maybe this is your jam). But use your Google Analytics (if you don't have an account - get one, it's free!) to see what's working and what isn't working on your website, what your customers are reading, what they're not reading. One of the best ways to stay relevant is to offer more of what your customers love and less of what they don't like.

#10. Update Your Header Image

This may seem a little "well, duh" - but so many people don't do this. And so many websites use lovely large images on their homepages, and it's the first thing your visitors see when they hit your site. So if you haven't updated your header image since you first launched your site - or even within the last few months - jump on that now! It's a super quick and easy way to be more relevant - just add a fresh new image that your audience will relate to!
